Santa Fe Bar and Grill
Formerly located downtown where it was known as San Francisco Bar and Grill (and revered for serving one of the best burgers in the City Different), this twelve year old restaurant has changed digs to DeVargas Mall to a larger, handsome, well-decorated space that includes an outdoor patio and TV bar. The one half pound burger is still a menu celebrity (with or without green chile, a choice of four cheeses, bacon, mushroom or guacamole), and is complemented by a tasty Mexican steak sandwich and Chimayo chicken sandwich. While the bias here is toward keeping carnivores happy (the baby back pork ribs and "baseball cut" of sirloin steak with onion rings will not disappoint), there are wonderful soups and salads, a smoked trout, and of course traditional northern New Mexico plates of tacos, enchiladas, rice and beans. Portions are generous, and prices range from about $7 to $15 for an entrée. The six appetizers (from salmon cakes to shrimp quesadilla) are around $5 and filling. Desserts include adobe mud pie and a killer chocolate sundae that features Taos Cow ice cream. If we have to find fault with anything, the cooks are partial to salt. Wait staff is friendly and efficient, and service is fast enough to squeeze in a quick business lunch if you have to decide the fate of the world. Open seven days for lunch, dinner, and a Sunday brunch (9 to 3:30).
